Why Abrasive Slurry Demands a Harder Seal Face
Drilling mud, frac sand and heavy slurries don’t just wear a seal. They sand-blast it. A carbon or ceramic face that lasts years in clean water can fail in weeks when it runs against fine silica. That is why Mission Magnum pumps are normally fitted with tungsten carbide against tungsten carbide, and why our replacement uses the same hard pairing. The seal is a bellows design, so it tolerates the shaft movement and vibration found on skid-mounted pumps. Fitting is quick: the rotary unit slides onto the shaft sleeve, the stationary seat sits in the stuffing box cover, and the spring is set to the working length. For pumps that run dry during start-up, a double seal with barrier fluid adds protection. Our blog explains how to pick between single and double seals for slurry service.
