Ceramic Seal Face
Ceramic (alumina) seal faces were the industry’s original hard-face material before carbide grades became common, and they still hold their place today for one clear reason: cost. High-purity alumina resists chemical attack from most acids and alkalis and offers good wear resistance, making it a reliable choice for clean, low-pressure, general-duty service. The trade-off is thermal — ceramic has lower thermal conductivity than carbide faces, so heat builds up at the face rather than dissipating quickly, and it’s prone to cracking under sudden temperature swings or mechanical shock. Mech Seal Engineering recommends ceramic seal faces for water pumps, light chemical transfer, and general industrial applications running below roughly 175°C, where budget matters more than extreme duty tolerance — for particulate-laden, high-temperature, or high-shock service, silicon carbide or tungsten carbide is the better fit.
