Silicon Carbide Seal Face
Silicon carbide is close to diamond on the hardness scale, which makes it the reference-point material for seal faces that need to survive both abrasive media and extreme temperature swings — mechanical strength holds up to around 1400°C before free silicon in the structure begins to soften. Mech Seal Engineering manufactures SiC seal faces in two grades: reaction-bonded, which resists chipping and impact well and suits general high-duty service, and self-sintered, a denser, metal-free version with better chemical resistance for aggressive or corrosive process fluids. Because SiC is not self-lubricating, it’s typically run against a carbon counterface in most services, while SiC-vs-SiC pairing is reserved for highly abrasive or high-pressure duty where a softer face would wear too fast. This makes silicon carbide the standard choice for chemical processing, high-pressure pumps, and any application combining heat, pressure, and particulate load.
